    Abstract
This essay examines the historical developments of archival education in the United States. This development can be divided into three main phases. The first phase (late 19th century to late 1960s) illustrate the begginings of archival education in the United States. The second phase (late 1960s to mid 1990s) shows the improvement and growth of archival studies curricula and growth of archives faculty in library and information science programs. The third phase (mid 1990s to present) illustrates the convergence of archival science with other fields within information science, and the diversification of research and scholarship from archives faculty. These historical developments put into perspective de dual responsibility of archival education: on the one hand, the analysis of the theoretical foundations and the history of archival science, and on the other hand the responsibility to prepare archivists to face the current tendencies in information science.
